Buying 10-16.5 skid steer tires
10-16.5 is the most common skid steer tire size. It is about 10 inches (254 mm) wide on a 16.5-inch rim and fits many small and mid-size skid steer loaders. Because skid steers turn by dragging their tires sideways, these tires wear quickly on concrete and rock, and they are built with heavy sidewalls and high ply ratings.
Choosing a 10-16.5 tire
- Ply rating: 8-ply suits light work; 10-ply and 12-ply are the most popular for general contracting and farm yard work.
- Tread: deep lugs for mud and dirt; wider, flatter treads for longer life on concrete and asphalt.
- Bias or radial: bias is the budget choice. The radial 10R16.5 rides smoother and can last longer on hard surfaces.
10-16.5 or 12-16.5?
Both fit a 16.5-inch rim. The 12-16.5 is wider and taller, with more flotation in soft ground. Moving up needs a rim wide enough for it and clearance in the wheel wells, so check your machine’s manual before switching.
Replace all four
A skid steer steers by speed difference between its sides. Mixed sizes or uneven wear make it pull and stress the drive chains, so replace all four together or keep the tread depth matched side to side.

How tall is the 10-16.5 tire?
The nominal overall diameter is about 33.5 in (851 mm), which gives a rolling circumference near 105 in (2,673 mm). That figure is an estimate that assumes an 85% aspect ratio, the usual rule for old inch sizes. Real tires vary by make and load, so treat it as a guide and use the tire diameter calculator or the lead-lag calculator before you change size on a front-wheel-assist tractor.
Is 10-16.5 a radial or a bias tire?
It is a bias-ply size. The dash in the size marks bias construction, which costs less and has stiffer sidewalls. See the radial vs bias guide.
