Buying 10R16.5 skid steer tires

10R16.5 is the radial version of 10-16.5, the most common skid steer tire size. It fits the same 16.5-inch skid steer wheels and has about the same overall size, about 10 inches (254 mm) wide, but it is built with radial plies and steel belts under the tread instead of crossed bias plies.

Radial or bias?

• Ride: the radial sidewall flexes, so the machine rides smoother and bounces less, which the operator feels over a long day.
• Wear: the belted tread stays flatter on the ground and scrubs less, so radials usually last longer on concrete and asphalt.
• Cost: radials cost more up front. They pay off on machines that work many hours on hard surfaces.
• Stability: bias tires have stiffer sidewalls, which some operators prefer for heavy lifting at full reach.

The bias 10-16.5 remains the budget choice for lighter-use machines.

What to check

• Don’t mix: run four radials or four bias tires, never a mix. A skid steer steers by speed difference between its sides, so all four tires need the same size and similar wear.
• Load rating: match or exceed the load index or ply rating on your current tires.
• Used tires: ask for the tread depth, the date code and photos of the sidewalls.
