Buying 11.2-24 tractor tires

11.2-24 is a rear tire for compact tractors. It is about 11.2 inches (284 mm) wide on a 24-inch wheel, one step narrower than 12.4-24, which fits the same rim. Owners use it for mowing, grading driveways, moving snow and light loader work.

The radial equivalents are 11.2R24 and 280/85R24, but most compact tractors run bias tires in this size.

11.2-24 or 12.4-24?

Both fit a 24-inch rim. The 12.4 is wider and a little taller, which gives more flotation and a slightly higher top speed. Moving up needs a rim wide enough for the bigger tire and room under the fenders. On a four-wheel-drive compact, a taller rear changes the front-to-rear ratio and can strain the front drive, so check before you change.

What to check

  • Tread: R-1 for dirt and snow, R-4 for loader work on hard ground, R-3 for lawns. See tread types.
  • Ply rating: match your current tires if you run a loader or backhoe attachment.
  • Valve stem and tube: tell us if your current tires are filled with liquid or run tubes.
  • Used tires: check the date code and look for cracks. Compact tractor tires often dry-rot before the tread wears.

What else is 11.2-24 called?

You will see 11.2-24, 11.2×24, 11.2/24 or 11.2 24: a bias-ply tire 11.2 in (284 mm) wide for a 24 in (610 mm) rim. The radial version is 11.2R24, and the usual metric radial match is 280/85R24. It is the narrowest common 24 in rear size, found on compact and small utility tractors, and retail listings show it in 6-ply and 8-ply versions.

How does 11.2-24 compare with the next sizes up?

Size Width Nominal height
11.2-24 284 mm (11.2 in) about 43.0 in (1,092 mm)
12.4-24 315 mm (12.4 in) about 45.1 in (1,146 mm)
13.6-24 345 mm (13.6 in) about 47.1 in (1,197 mm)

Nominal figures use the standard size formula with an 85% aspect ratio for old inch sizes. Each step up adds about 2 in (51 mm) of height. If you want a bigger footprint on a small tractor, check fender clearance and the front-to-rear ratio with the lead-lag calculator first. Compact tractors often run bias tires because they are cheaper and stiff enough to hold a loader steady.

Which tread suits 11.2-24?

R-1 for dirt, mud and snow. R-4 for loader and gravel work. R-3 for lawns. See the tread types guide.

How tall is the 11.2-24 tire?

The nominal overall diameter is about 43 in (1,093 mm), which gives a rolling circumference near 135 in (3,434 mm). That figure is an estimate that assumes an 85% aspect ratio, the usual rule for old inch sizes. Real tires vary by make and load, so treat it as a guide and use the tire diameter calculator or the lead-lag calculator before you change size on a front-wheel-assist tractor.

Is 11.2-24 a radial or a bias tire?

It is a bias-ply size. The dash in the size marks bias construction, which costs less and has stiffer sidewalls. See the radial vs bias guide.
