Buying 420/85R24 tractor tires

420/85R24 is a radial tire used as the front tire on many mid-size and large front-wheel-assist tractors, and as a rear on utility tractors and loaders. It is 420 mm (about 16.5 inches) wide, with a sidewall 85% of the width, on a 24-inch rim. It is the metric name for 16.9R24; the bias equivalent is 16.9-24.

Most 420/85R24 tires are made with R-1W tread, with lugs about 20% deeper than standard R-1, for traction in wet soil and longer wear.

Matching fronts and rears

On a front-wheel-assist tractor the front axle is geared to turn slightly faster than the rear. That only works if the front and rear tires have the right rolling circumference. When you replace the fronts, keep the same size and construction as the originals, ideally the same brand, or send us your rear size so we can check the ratio. The wrong combination wears tires fast and can damage the front drive.

What to check

  • Load index and speed symbol: the code next to the size. Front tires carry the weight of a front loader, so match or exceed what you have.
  • Don’t mix constructions: never run a bias and a radial on the same axle.
  • Used tires: ask for the tread depth as a percent, the date code and photos of both sidewalls. Front tires can wear unevenly from toe-in and loader work.

How tall is the 420/85R24 tire?

The nominal overall diameter is about 52.1 in (1,324 mm), which gives a rolling circumference near 164 in (4,158 mm). That figure is worked out from the size formula (rim plus two sidewalls). Real tires vary by make and load, so treat it as a guide and use the tire diameter calculator or the lead-lag calculator before you change size on a front-wheel-assist tractor.

Is 420/85R24 a radial or a bias tire?

It is a radial. The R in the size marks radial construction, and radials need careful pressure setting. See the radial vs bias guide.
