Buying 14.9-24 tires
14.9-24 is a rear tire for utility and compact-utility tractors, and in R-4 tread a rear for tractor loaders and small backhoes. It is about 14.9 inches (378 mm) wide on a 24-inch wheel, lower and more compact than a 14.9-28 of the same width.
R-1 or R-4?
- R-1 farm lug: the best pull in soil, mud and snow. The choice for field and pasture work.
- R-4 industrial: shorter, closer lugs for loader work on gravel, concrete and packed dirt, and less damage to lawns than R-1.
Tell us which one you run, and keep the same tread on both sides of the axle. Our tread types guide explains the difference.
The radial equivalents are 14.9R24 and 380/85R24. The same radial is also used as a front tire on many front-wheel-assist tractors.
What to check
- Ply rating: 6-ply and 8-ply are common; loader tractors should use the higher rating.
- Front-wheel-assist tractors: changing the rear size or construction changes the front-to-rear ratio. Check it before you order.
- Used tires: ask for the tread depth, the date code and photos of both sidewalls.

What else is 14.9-24 called?
You will see 14.9-24, 14.9×24, 14.9/24 or 14.9 24: a bias-ply tire 14.9 in (378 mm) wide for a 24 in (610 mm) rim. The radial version is 14.9R24, and the usual metric radial match is 380/85R24. Retail listings show 14.9-24 in R-1 farm tread and R-4 industrial tread, so check the tread code before you order.
How does 14.9-24 compare with other 24 in rim sizes?
Nominal figures use the standard size formula, with an 85% aspect ratio for old inch sizes, so real tires vary by make.
| Size | Width | Nominal height |
|---|---|---|
| 12.4-24 | 315 mm (12.4 in) | about 45.1 in (1,146 mm) |
| 13.6-24 | 345 mm (13.6 in) | about 47.1 in (1,197 mm) |
| 14.9-24 | 378 mm (14.9 in) | about 49.3 in (1,252 mm) |
| 380/85R24 (radial) | 380 mm (15 in) | about 49.4 in (1,256 mm) |
| 16.9-24 | 429 mm (16.9 in) | about 52.7 in (1,339 mm) |
The radial 380/85R24 is almost the same height as a bias 14.9-24, so it is the clean upgrade. Moving to 16.9-24 adds about 3.4 in (86 mm), so check fender clearance and your front-to-rear ratio with the lead-lag calculator and the tire size converter.
Which tread should a 14.9-24 have?
R-1 for field work and mud. R-4 for loader, yard and gravel work, where a lower, closer tread wears slower and rides better on hard ground. R-3 turf if lawn marks matter. The tread types guide explains each.

How tall is the 14.9-24 tire?
The nominal overall diameter is about 49.3 in (1,253 mm), which gives a rolling circumference near 155 in (3,936 mm). That figure is an estimate that assumes an 85% aspect ratio, the usual rule for old inch sizes. Real tires vary by make and load, so treat it as a guide and use the tire diameter calculator or the lead-lag calculator before you change size on a front-wheel-assist tractor.
Is 14.9-24 a radial or a bias tire?
It is a bias-ply size. The dash in the size marks bias construction, which costs less and has stiffer sidewalls. See the radial vs bias guide.
