Buying 340/85R24 tractor tires

340/85R24 is a radial tire used as a front on front-wheel-assist utility tractors and as a rear on compact and utility tractors. It is 340 mm (about 13.4 inches) wide, with a sidewall 85% of the width, on a 24-inch rim. It is the metric name for 13.6R24; the bias equivalent is 13.6-24.

Most 340/85R24 tires use R-1W tread for traction in wet soil and longer wear.

Front tire on utility tractors

This is a common front size on mid-size front-wheel-assist tractors, paired with radial rears in the 38-inch or 34-inch range depending on the model. The front axle turns slightly faster than the rear, set by the tire sizes, so replace fronts with the same size and construction as the originals, or send us your rear size and tractor model so we can check the ratio. Sizes close to it include 320/85R24 and 380/85R24; they are not interchangeable on a driven front axle.

What to check

  • Load index and speed symbol: front loaders put heavy weight on the front tires. Match or exceed your current rating.
  • Don’t mix constructions: never run bias and radial on the same axle.
  • Used tires: ask for the tread depth as a percent, the date code and photos. Look for uneven wear from toe-in.
  • Pairs: replace both fronts together.

How tall is the 340/85R24 tire?

The nominal overall diameter is about 46.8 in (1,188 mm), which gives a rolling circumference near 147 in (3,731 mm). That figure is worked out from the size formula (rim plus two sidewalls). Real tires vary by make and load, so treat it as a guide and use the tire diameter calculator or the lead-lag calculator before you change size on a front-wheel-assist tractor.

Is 340/85R24 a radial or a bias tire?

It is a radial. The R in the size marks radial construction, and radials need careful pressure setting. See the radial vs bias guide.
