Buying 16.9-28 tires

16.9-28 does two jobs. On farms it is a rear tire for utility tractors, usually with R-1 bar lugs. On construction and yard machines it is one of the most common rear backhoe loader sizes, fitted with R-4 industrial tread. The size is the same, about 16.9 inches (429 mm) wide on a 28-inch rim, but the two tires are built for different work, so tell us which one you need.

  • R-1 (farm): tall, open lugs that dig in and clean out in soil. The best choice for field work.
  • R-4 (industrial): shorter, closer lugs for stability and wear on concrete and gravel. The standard for backhoes. See our backhoe and loader tires.

The radial equivalent is 16.9R28, also sold as 420/85R28. Radials ride better on the road; bias tires are cheaper and have the stiff sidewall many loader operators prefer.

What to check

  • Tread type: R-1 or R-4. Mixing them on one axle makes the machine pull to one side.
  • Ply rating: backhoe rears carry heavy loads, so 10-ply and up is common. Match what you have.
  • Used tires: ask for the tread depth and photos. Industrial tires often wear unevenly on hard ground.

How tall is the 16.9-28 tire?

The nominal overall diameter is about 56.7 in (1,441 mm), which gives a rolling circumference near 178 in (4,527 mm). That figure is an estimate that assumes an 85% aspect ratio, the usual rule for old inch sizes. Real tires vary by make and load, so treat it as a guide and use the tire diameter calculator or the lead-lag calculator before you change size on a front-wheel-assist tractor.

Is 16.9-28 a radial or a bias tire?

It is a bias-ply size. The dash in the size marks bias construction, which costs less and has stiffer sidewalls. See the radial vs bias guide.
