Buying 11.2-28 tractor tires
11.2-28 is a narrow rear tire for compact and small row-crop tractors, including many older machines used in vegetables, orchards and vineyards. It is about 11.2 inches (284 mm) wide on a 28-inch wheel. The narrow width lets the tractor run between rows, and the taller rim gives more crop clearance than an 11.2-24 of the same width.
The radial equivalents are 11.2R28 and 280/85R28. Most tractors in this size run bias R-1, the economical choice for modest yearly hours.
Easy to confuse
- 11.2-24 vs 11.2-28: same width, different rim. Read the last number on the sidewall.
- 11.2-28 vs 12.4-28: same rim; the 12.4 is wider and taller. Check rim width, fender clearance and row spacing before moving up.
What to check
- Tread: R-1 for field work. For mostly turf, ask about R-3.
- Tube or tubeless: older 28-inch rims often need tubes. Tell us what you run.
- Ply rating: 4-ply and 6-ply are common. Go higher with a loader.
- Used tires: ask for the tread remaining, the date code and photos showing cracks between the lugs.
- Pairs: replace both rears together.

How tall is the 11.2-28 tire?
The nominal overall diameter is about 47 in (1,195 mm), which gives a rolling circumference near 148 in (3,754 mm). That figure is an estimate that assumes an 85% aspect ratio, the usual rule for old inch sizes. Real tires vary by make and load, so treat it as a guide and use the tire diameter calculator or the lead-lag calculator before you change size on a front-wheel-assist tractor.
Is 11.2-28 a radial or a bias tire?
It is a bias-ply size. The dash in the size marks bias construction, which costs less and has stiffer sidewalls. See the radial vs bias guide.
