Buying 12.4-28 tractor tires
12.4-28 is a rear tire for small utility and row-crop tractors, including many older machines. It is about 12.4 inches (315 mm) wide on a 28-inch wheel. The narrow width suits row crops and orchards, and the taller rim gives more ground clearance than a 12.4-24 of the same width.
The radial equivalents are 12.4R28 and 320/85R28. Most tractors in this class stay with bias R-1, which is the economical choice for modest yearly hours.
Easy to confuse
- 12.4-24, 12.4-28, 12.4-30 and 12.4-32 share the same width but fit different wheels. Read the rim size, the last number on the sidewall.
- Moving up to 13.6-28: same rim, wider and taller tire. Check rim width, fender clearance and your row spacing first.
What to check
- Tread: R-1 for field work. For mostly turf work, ask about R-3.
- Tube or tubeless: older rims often need tubes. Tell us what you run now.
- Used tires: ask for the tread depth, the date code and photos. Tractors stored outside often show weather cracks before the tread wears out.
- Pairs: replace both rears together for even pulling.

How tall is the 12.4-28 tire?
The nominal overall diameter is about 49.1 in (1,247 mm), which gives a rolling circumference near 154 in (3,916 mm). That figure is an estimate that assumes an 85% aspect ratio, the usual rule for old inch sizes. Real tires vary by make and load, so treat it as a guide and use the tire diameter calculator or the lead-lag calculator before you change size on a front-wheel-assist tractor.
Is 12.4-28 a radial or a bias tire?
It is a bias-ply size. The dash in the size marks bias construction, which costs less and has stiffer sidewalls. See the radial vs bias guide.
