Lawn Tractor Tires: Sizes, Tread and How to Choose
Lawn tractor tires are small turf tires, usually 15 to 20 inches (381 to 508 mm) tall, that grip grass without tearing it. A size like 18x8.50-8 gives the diameter, tread width and rim in inches. Pick turf tread for mowing and a 4-ply casing for rough ground.
Lawn tractor tires have one job: roll over grass without leaving a crime scene. (Turf wars are bad enough without the tread marks.)
Lawn tractor tires are small turf tires, usually 15 to 20 inches (381 to 508 mm) tall, that grip grass without tearing it up. A size such as 18×8.50-8 gives the overall diameter, the tread width and the rim, all in inches. Pick a turf tread for mowing, a 4-ply casing for rough ground, and read the sidewall for pressure.

What size are lawn tractor tires?
Most lawn tractor tires use a three-number size. In 18×8.50-8, Tires-Easy explains that 18 is the diameter in inches, 8.50 is the tread width and 8 is the rim the tire fits. Some tires use two numbers, such as 4.80-8: a width of about 4.8 inches on an 8-inch rim. Typical lawn and garden tractor diameters run from 15 to 20 inches, according to Giga Tires.
| Size | Overall diameter | Tread width | Rim |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15×6.00-6 | 15 in (381 mm) | 6 in (152 mm) | 6 in (152 mm) |
| 18×8.50-8 | 18 in (457 mm) | 8.5 in (216 mm) | 8 in (203 mm) |
| 23×8.50-12 | 23 in (584 mm) | 8.5 in (216 mm) | 12 in (305 mm) |
Rule of thumb: the sidewall of the tire you are replacing beats the manual. Read the size off the old tire, then check it against the manual. Rim size must match exactly. Diameter and width can move a little, but not enough to rub the fender or the deck.
Which tread suits a lawn tractor: turf, lug or rib?
It depends on the ground, not the brand. Both Tires-Easy and Giga Tires describe the same families of tread.
| Tread | What it does | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Turf (chevron) | Blocks in rows grip slick grass without tearing it | Mowing, and the default for most lawns |
| Round-shoulder turf | Lets the tire turn tight with little turf damage | Residential lawns with tight turns |
| Lug or knobby | Deep grooves clear mud, dirt and debris | Dirt, sand, mud or towing, but rough on a lawn |
| Rib | Straight ribs roll easily and last a long time | Flat, firm ground where you do not need much pull |
On a farm tractor, the turf family carries the code R-3. If you want the full code list, see our guide to R-1, R-2, R-3 and R-4 treads. Flotation-style turf tires, such as the Carlisle Turf Saver, spread the weight over a wider footprint to cut soil compaction on soft ground.

Do you need 2-ply or 4-ply lawn tractor tires?
Plies tell you how strong the casing is. Common lawn tractor sizes come in two options: load range A, which is 2-ply, and load range B, which is 4-ply. The 4-ply casing is thicker, so it resists punctures better. Choose it for thorny or rough ground, or if the tractor does more than mow. Higher ratings exist (C is 6-ply, D is 8-ply), but lawn tractors rarely need them.
You may also see NHS on the sidewall. It means non-highway service: the tire is not rated for road speeds. Do not tow your tractor down the road on its own tires.
What pressure should lawn tractor tires run?
Riding mower tires usually run low. Giga Tires gives 10 to 20 psi (0.7 to 1.4 bar) as typical, but your sidewall and your manual set the real number. Never go above the maximum printed on the sidewall. Check all four tires, because one soft tire changes how the tractor sits and steers. (We need to have a pressurised conversation about that one.)
How long do lawn tractor tires last?
Giga Tires puts the life of a well-maintained tire at 3 to 10 years. Replace sooner if you see any of these:
- Tread worn smooth, so the tire spins on wet grass
- Deep cracks in the sidewall, or a bulge
- A tire that will not hold air after a repair
- A different size or tread from its pair on the same axle
Replace tires in pairs on the same axle, with the same size and tread. Mismatched pairs make the tractor pull to one side.
Lawn tractor tires or garden tractor tires?
The words overlap, but the machines do not. Lawn tractors are lighter and run smaller tires. Garden tractors are heavier, with larger rear wheels and bigger treads. If your tractor is the heavier type, read our guide to garden tractor tires instead.
How do you pick the right lawn tractor tire in five steps?
- Read the old tire. Front and rear sizes often differ, so write down both.
- Match the rim. The last number in the size must be the same.
- Choose the tread. Turf for lawns, lug for dirt and mud, rib for flat firm ground.
- Choose the ply. 2-ply for smooth lawns, 4-ply for rough or thorny ground.
- Replace in pairs. Same size and tread on both sides, then set the pressure from the sidewall.
Can you fit bigger tires on a lawn tractor?
Sometimes, but check clearance first. A taller tire covers more ground per turn, so the tractor runs a little faster than before. It can also rub the fender or the mower deck on turns and bumps. A wider tire adds footprint, but it needs room in the wheel well. Stick to the sizes your manual lists unless you have measured the space.
When you should not buy from us
Skip the quote in three cases. If the tire holds air and the tread is even, keep it. If you have a simple puncture, get it repaired locally. And if you need a small mower size such as 15×6.00-6, we do not list it. We stock larger turf and utility sizes, and we would rather tell you now than waste your week.
Which lawn and utility sizes do we supply?
These are the small turf and utility sizes in our catalog. Open any size to see the specs, then check it against your manual.
| Size | Overall diameter | Rim |
|---|---|---|
| 18×8.50-10 | 18 in (457 mm) | 10 in (254 mm) |
| 20×8.00-10 | 20 in (508 mm) | 10 in (254 mm) |
| 23×8.50-12 | 23 in (584 mm) | 12 in (305 mm) |
You can see every size on our tire size index. Send us your size on WhatsApp. We’ll find the tire. We’ll probably make a turf joke. It’s free, and it never leaves a mark on the lawn.
Questions
What size are lawn tractor tires?
Most run 15 to 20 inches (381 to 508 mm) tall. A size such as 18x8.50-8 means 18 inches tall, 8.5 inches wide and an 8-inch rim. Read the size on your current tire.
What is the best tread for a lawn tractor?
A turf tread, usually a chevron pattern, for mowing. It grips grass without tearing it. Choose a lug tread only if you work on dirt, mud or towing, and accept some lawn damage.
Are lawn tractor tires 2-ply or 4-ply?
Both exist. Load range A is 2-ply and load range B is 4-ply. The 4-ply casing resists punctures better, so choose it for rough or thorny ground.
What pressure should lawn tractor tires run?
Riding mower tires typically run 10 to 20 psi (0.7 to 1.4 bar). Always follow the pressure on your sidewall and in your manual, and never exceed the sidewall maximum.
Can I mix different lawn tractor tires?
Not on the same axle. Use the same size and tread on both sides, or the tractor pulls to one side. Replace tires in pairs.
How often should I replace lawn tractor tires?
Well-maintained tires can last 3 to 10 years. Replace them sooner if the tread is smooth, the sidewall has deep cracks or a bulge, or they will not hold air.
What does NHS mean on a tire?
Non-highway service. The tire is not rated for road speeds, so do not tow the tractor on the road on its own tires.
Do you sell lawn tractor tires?
We supply small turf and utility sizes such as 18x8.50-10, 20x8.00-10 and 23x8.50-12. We do not list small mower sizes such as 15x6.00-6. Send us your size on WhatsApp and we will check.
