R14 Tractor Tires: Hybrid Tread, Sizes and R4 vs R14

R14 tractor tires use a hybrid tread that blends R-1 farm lugs, R-3 turf features and R-4 industrial durability. They are built for compact tractors up to 150 hp that switch between grass, gravel, dirt and snow. Expect balanced grip, not the best grip at any single job.

R14 tractor tires are the tires that refused to pick a side. They carry a farm lug, a turf manner and an industrial backbone, which makes them the diplomats of the tread world. (With better traction, though. Diplomats rarely pull a loader.)

R14 tractor tires use a hybrid tread that blends R-1 farm lugs, R-3 turf features and R-4 industrial features. They are made for compact tractors up to 150 hp that mow on Monday, scoop gravel on Tuesday and push snow in January. You get balanced grip. You do not get the best grip at any single job.

What does R-14 mean on a tractor tire?

R-14 is a hybrid, not one of the five classic tread codes. AgDaily says the name comes from mixing an R-1 with an R-4. Titan, which launched its Goodyear R14T for compact tractors in 2018, also borrows from R-3 turf, according to Modern Tire Dealer.

The idea is simple. Before the R14T, a compact tractor owner picked R-1, R-3 or R-4, or swapped tires for different jobs. One tire for all of them saves the swap. It also saves the weekend.

What does the hybrid tread borrow from R-1, R-3 and R-4?

Each parent tread donates one trait. The table shows who gave what, using Titan’s description and the Pine Plains Tractor comparison.

Parent tread What R-14 borrows Where the parent shines
R-1 agricultural Traction and self-cleaning Loose soil
R-3 turf Less ground disturbance Firm, dry turf
R-4 industrial Wear life and a calmer ride on hard surfaces Gravel, pavement, loader work

The center is industrial in style, with wide spacing between the lugs. AgDaily says it cleans itself in soft conditions. Think of it as the mullet of treads: business up front, party in the lugs.

Not sure which classic code you run today? Our R1 vs R2 vs R3 vs R4 guide covers all five, and the R1 tractor tires guide covers the farm parent.

Where do R14 tractor tires work best?

On compact tractors that change jobs. Titan sizes the line for tractors up to 150 hp. Kubota tested the tire for snow, field, yard, loader and pasture work, and fits it as an exclusive on select BX-Series and B-Series models, Modern Tire Dealer reports.

Kubota’s reasoning: most compact tractors wear R-4 tires, which give less traction. R-1 grips better but vibrates more on hard surfaces. R-14 sits in the middle.

Snow is the bold claim. AgDaily reports that the many biting edges let it move snow without chains. Pine Plains is more careful and says snow results vary. Treat the no-chains claim as the best case.

R4 vs R14: which tread should your tractor wear?

Pine Plains Tractor compares the two like this. These are general tendencies, not test scores.

Factor R-14 hybrid R-4 industrial
Traction Balanced across mixed surfaces Good on firm, mixed surfaces
Lawn marks Compromise, can still mark lawns Can mark soft lawns
Mud Better cleanout than R-4 Can pack with sticky mud
Snow Suited, results vary May struggle on packed snow
Hard surfaces Balances ride and bite Durable

Rule of thumb from the same source: start with R-4 when loader work and hard surfaces dominate. Compare R-14 when the same tractor also mows, works loose soil and clears snow. Our R4 tractor tires guide covers the industrial side in full.

Which R14 sizes exist, and which do we list?

Titan launched the R14T in four sizes in 2018 and had 18 by 2019, says Modern Tire Dealer. Honest answer: our catalog has no tire coded R-14 today, and we will not pretend otherwise. We do list several sizes from Titan’s R14T range, so we can check what fits your tractor. Sizes in this table appear on that list.

Size Dimensions Models in our catalog listing it
23×8.50-12 23 in (584 mm) tall, 8.50 in (216 mm) wide, 12 in (305 mm) rim 1
12-16.5 12 in (305 mm) wide, 16.5 in (419 mm) rim 2
27×8.50-15 27 in (686 mm) tall, 8.50 in (216 mm) wide, 15 in (381 mm) rim 1
15-19.5 15 in (381 mm) wide, 19.5 in (495 mm) rim 1
320/85R24 320 mm (12.6 in) wide, 24 in (610 mm) rim 14
380/85R24 380 mm (15.0 in) wide, 24 in (610 mm) rim 15
460/85R30 460 mm (18.1 in) wide, 30 in (762 mm) rim 15

Those counts include other tread codes. A size match means we can quote the size, not that the tread is R-14.

Are R14 tires good?

Mostly yes, for the right tractor. Pine Plains lists balanced grip across mixed surfaces, a more open pattern than a conventional R-4 for easier cleanout, and a ride that sits between the two parents.

The catches are also fair. R-14 can still mark lawns. Snow results vary. A hybrid name does not guarantee identical performance from every R-14 style tire, and loader work means checking the load rating. On four-wheel drive, keep front and rear tires matched. We have no test data of our own and no reviews to quote, so we do not print star ratings.

When you don’t need R14 tractor tires

Skip the quote in these cases.

  • You mow most days. R-3 turf is gentler on grass than a compromise tread.
  • Your tractor lives on gravel and pavement with a loader. R-4 is the durable pick.
  • You work soft farm fields with a full-size tractor. R-1 is the farm tread.
  • Your tires hold air and the lugs wear evenly. Keep them.
  • The tire is soft, not worn. A soft tire needs a gauge, not a purchase.

Our opinion: most traction complaints are pressure complaints. The University of Kentucky guide AEN-93 sets target wheel slip at about 10% for MFWD and 13 to 15% for 2WD, and says to run the lowest pressure the load table allows. Fix that first. Tread carefully before you spend.

How do you get an R14 quote without guessing?

Read the size off the sidewall of the tire you are replacing, front and rear, because four-wheel drive wants a matched set. Add your tractor model and what it does most weeks. A photo of the sidewall helps. Unsure which tread you run now? The tread type picker asks a few questions and gives you a code.

Then start on our quote page or send us your size on WhatsApp. We’ll find the tire. We’ll probably also make a tread joke. The joke is free, and it will not mark your lawn.

Questions

What does R14 mean on a tractor tire?

R-14 is a hybrid tread, not one of the five classic codes. It blends R-1 agricultural traction, R-3 turf manners and R-4 industrial durability. Titan's Goodyear R14T is the best-known example.

Are R14 tires good?

They suit compact tractors that change jobs. Pine Plains lists balanced grip and easier cleanout than R-4. The trade-offs are that they can still mark lawns and snow results vary.

Which is better, R4 or R14?

Neither wins every job. Start with R-4 when loader work and hard surfaces dominate. Compare R-14 when the same tractor also mows, works loose soil and clears snow.

Are R14 tires good in snow?

Titan's tread has many biting edges, and AgDaily reports it can move snow without chains. Pine Plains says snow results vary. Treat the no-chains claim as the best case.

Are R14 tires good for lawns?

They are a compromise. Pine Plains says R-14 can still mark lawns. If mowing is the main job, an R-3 turf tire is gentler on grass.

Do Kubota tractors come with R14 tires?

Kubota fits the Goodyear R14T as an exclusive on select BX-Series and B-Series models, per Modern Tire Dealer in 2019. Check your model and the sidewall of the tires on it.

What sizes and horsepower do R14 tires cover?

Titan sizes the R14T line for compact tractors up to 150 hp, in 18 sizes by 2019. They range from 23x8.50-12 to 460/85R38. We can check sizes from that list against your tractor.

Can I mix R14 and R4 tires on one tractor?

On four-wheel drive, keep front and rear matched, as Pine Plains warns. Mixed treads and sizes can fight the drivetrain. Send us your sizes and we will check the pairing.
