R3 Tires: What They Are, Where They Work and When They Don’t
R3 tires are turf tires. The R-3 tread has wide, closely spaced, shallow lugs, up to 65% of the depth of an R-1, so the tire spreads weight and leaves grass alone. R3 tires suit mowing, parks and golf courses, but they lose grip in mud and snow.
R3 tires are turf tires: wide, shallow and built to roll over grass without signing their name on it. Put a farm lug on a lawn and the grass holds a grudge until spring.
Here is the rule of thumb. If the job is grass, think R-3. If the job is dirt, think R-1 or R-4. We read Yokohama OHT, Farm Progress and Hobby Farms to build this guide, and we kept what they agree on.

What is the R-3 tread, and what do R3 tires look like?
R-3 is the turf tread code. Yokohama OHT describes closely spaced, geometric blocks that keep the tire stable on uneven ground. The footprint is wide, so the machine’s weight spreads out. The shoulders are rounded, so turns do not tear up the surface.
Farm Progress says R-3 lugs run up to 65% of the depth of an R-1, usually in button or turf patterns. Hobby Farms adds that R-3 tires are wider than R-1 and R-2 tires. Shallow lugs, wide stance, soft touch. It is the tire version of taking your boots off at the door.

Where do R3 tires work best?
On grass you want to keep. Yokohama OHT lists zero-turn mowers, traditional lawn mowers and compact tractors, and names parks, playing fields and golf courses as the usual jobs. Hobby Farms agrees: mowing grass and routine garden work.
That is why R3 turf tires sit on small machines. Our lawn tractor tires guide covers the common sizes. On turf, tread lightly. R-3 does it for you.

Where do R3 tires fall short?
Mud and snow. Hobby Farms says R-3 tires perform poorly in wet conditions, because the shallow tread clogs and the wheels spin. An R-1 lug digs in. An R-3 block skates. The wide footprint that saves your lawn does not save your afternoon.
There is a middle road. Yokohama OHT describes R-3+, a hybrid that mixes the classic R-1 tractor tread with R-3 blocks and adds depth. It gives more traction and better self-cleaning than plain R-3, with less turf disturbance. It suits compact tractors that mow in summer and clear snow in winter. The R-14 tread is a different blend, covered in our R14 tractor tires guide.

R-3 vs R-1 vs R-4: which tread fits which ground?
It is a turf war, and each tread wins on its own ground. The table sets them side by side.
| Tread | Lug depth | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| R-1 | Deepest of the group | Soft soil, tilling, towing | Ruts lawns |
| R-3 | Up to 65% of R-1 depth | Lawns, parks, golf courses, mowing | Clogs and spins in mud and snow |
| R-4 | Between R-1 and R-3 | Mixed work, hard surfaces, loaders | Rougher on grass than R-3, less grip than R-1 in mud |
| R-3+ | Deeper than plain R-3 | Summer mowing, winter snow | A hybrid, so a compromise |
Our opinion: do not ask an R-3 to do an R-1’s job. At up to 65% of the lug depth (Farm Progress), it has less tread to bite with, and no amount of wishing fixes that. Pick by the ground, not the badge. Our R1 tractor tires guide and R4 tractor tires guide cover the other two.

Which turf tire sizes do we list?
Honest answer: we list no tire coded R-3. We do list one turf tire, the Carlisle Turf Saver, a bias tire in two sizes. Our listing gives it no tread code, so we do not call it R-3. Read your sidewall before you assume anything fits. The table is a snapshot, not a fitment list.
| Size | Overall height, width and rim | Type |
|---|---|---|
| 20×8.00-10 | 20 in (508 mm) tall, 8 in (203 mm) wide, 10 in (254 mm) rim | Turf, bias (Carlisle Turf Saver) |
| 23×8.50-12 | 23 in (584 mm) tall, 8.5 in (216 mm) wide, 12 in (305 mm) rim | Turf, bias (Carlisle Turf Saver) |

When don’t you need new R3 tires?
More often than you would think. We would rather say so now than after the quote.
- The tread still has depth and wears evenly. Keep running it.
- A puncture or a slow leak. Get it repaired locally.
- The lawn only ruts after wet days. Wait for dry ground before you blame the tire.
- Most of your work is mud, snow or soft soil. A new R-3 is the wrong tire. You need a different tread, not another R-3.
If the tires are worn out or the tread is wrong for the job, start a quote with your size and your main job. We will tell you if it is not worth buying, even if it costs us the sale.

Questions
What are R3 tires used for?
R3 tires are turf tires. They suit zero-turn mowers, lawn mowers, compact tractors, parks, playing fields and golf courses. Their wide footprint and shallow lugs spread weight and leave grass alone.
What does R-3 mean on a tractor tire?
R-3 is the tread code for turf. The tire has closely spaced, shallow blocks and a wide footprint. It is built to protect grass, not to dig into soil.
Are R3 tires good in mud or snow?
No. Hobby Farms says R-3 tires perform poorly in mud and snow because the shallow tread clogs and the wheels spin. For soft ground, look at R-1 or R-4 instead.
How deep is R-3 tread?
Farm Progress says R-3 lugs run up to 65% of the depth of an R-1. Makers do not agree on one number, so check the data sheet for your exact tire.
R3 vs R4 tires: which is better for a compact tractor?
R-3 is gentler on turf. R-4 sits between R-1 and R-3 in depth, handles mixed work and hard surfaces, and is rougher on grass. Choose by the ground you drive on most.
What is an R-3+ tire?
Yokohama OHT describes R-3+ as a hybrid of the classic R-1 tractor tread and R-3 blocks, with extra depth. It gives more traction and better self-cleaning than R-3, with less turf disturbance.
What R3 tire size fits my tractor?
Read the size on the sidewall of the tire you have now, then check your manual. R-3 is a tread type, not a size, so the same tread comes in many sizes.
Do you list R3 tires?
We list no tire coded R-3. We list one turf tire, the Carlisle Turf Saver, in 20x8.00-10 and 23x8.50-12. Send us your size and we will tell you if we can source an R-3.
