Buying 12.5/80-18 tires

12.5/80-18 is one of the most common front tires on backhoe loaders, and it is also used on telehandlers and some compact loaders. It is about 12.5 inches (318 mm) wide, with a sidewall 80% of the width, on an 18-inch rim. On a backhoe the front tires carry the loader bucket and steer the machine, so load rating matters more than anything else.

Tread choices

  • R-4 industrial: the usual choice. Good traction in dirt and good wear on hard surfaces.
  • I-3 traction: an implement-style lug tread used on some two-wheel-drive backhoe fronts.

Match the tread across the axle, and on a four-wheel-drive backhoe keep the fronts matched to the rears as the machine maker specifies. Our backhoe and loader tires page lists common rear sizes such as 16.9-28 and 16.9-24.

What to check

  • Ply rating: 10-ply to 14-ply is typical. A full bucket loads the front axle heavily, so never go lower than what you have.
  • Front-wheel drive: on 4WD backhoes, a mismatched front tire can strain the front drive. Tell us your machine model.
  • Used tires: ask for the tread depth, the date code and photos of the sidewalls. Look for cuts from rock and rebar.

How tall is the 12.5/80-18 tire?

The nominal overall diameter is about 38 in (965 mm), which gives a rolling circumference near 119 in (3,032 mm). That figure is worked out from the size formula (rim plus two sidewalls). Real tires vary by make and load, so treat it as a guide and use the tire diameter calculator or the lead-lag calculator before you change size on a front-wheel-assist tractor.

Is 12.5/80-18 a radial or a bias tire?

It is a bias-ply size. The dash in the size marks bias construction, which costs less and has stiffer sidewalls. See the radial vs bias guide.
