Buying 14.9-30 tractor tires
14.9-30 is a rear tire for utility and smaller row-crop tractors. It is about 14.9 inches (378 mm) wide on a 30-inch wheel, taller than a 14.9-28 and shorter than a 14.9-38 of the same width. It is common on mid-size tractors used for hay, pasture, feeding and light tillage, and on many older tractors still in daily use.
The radial equivalents are 14.9R30 and 380/85R30. Most tractors in this class stay with bias R-1, the economical choice for moderate hours.
Easy to confuse
- 14.9-24, 14.9-28, 14.9-30 and 14.9-38 share the same width but fit different wheels. Read the rim size, the last number on the sidewall.
- Moving up to 16.9-30: same rim, wider and taller tire. Check rim width, fender clearance and your front-to-rear ratio first.
What to check
- Tread: R-1 for field work; R-4 if the tractor mostly runs a loader on hard ground.
- Ply rating: 6-ply and 8-ply are common. Go higher with a loader.
- Tube or tubeless: tell us what you run now, and whether the tires are filled with liquid ballast.
- Used tires: ask for the tread depth, the date code and photos showing any weather cracks.

How tall is the 14.9-30 tire?
The nominal overall diameter is about 55.3 in (1,405 mm), which gives a rolling circumference near 174 in (4,415 mm). That figure is an estimate that assumes an 85% aspect ratio, the usual rule for old inch sizes. Real tires vary by make and load, so treat it as a guide and use the tire diameter calculator or the lead-lag calculator before you change size on a front-wheel-assist tractor.
Is 14.9-30 a radial or a bias tire?
It is a bias-ply size. The dash in the size marks bias construction, which costs less and has stiffer sidewalls. See the radial vs bias guide.
