Buying 16.9-38 tractor tires

16.9-38 is a tall, narrow rear tire for row-crop tractors. It is about 16.9 inches (429 mm) wide on a 38-inch wheel. The narrow width lets the tractor run between crop rows without damaging plants, and the tall rim gives good crop clearance. It is also a common choice for duals on row-crop tractors, where two narrow tires on each side give flotation while still fitting between rows.

The radial equivalents are 16.9R38 and 420/85R38. For tractors doing long days of planting, spraying and cultivating, a radial usually pays off in traction, ride and tread life.

Row width and duals

Measure your row spacing and the tire’s section width before ordering. As a rule, the tire should be clearly narrower than the gap between rows so it does not ride on the plants, and the spacing between duals must leave the tires centered in the rows. Tell us your row spacing and whether you run duals, and we will check the fit.

What to check

  • Tread: R-1 is standard; R-1W gives more grip and wear in wet soil.
  • Ply rating or load index: match or exceed your current tires, especially on the inner dual, which carries more load.
  • Front-wheel-assist ratio: check it before changing rear size or construction.
  • Used tires: ask for the tread depth, the date code and photos of both sidewalls.

How tall is the 16.9-38 tire?

The nominal overall diameter is about 66.7 in (1,695 mm), which gives a rolling circumference near 21 in (5,325 mm). That figure is an estimate that assumes an 85% aspect ratio, the usual rule for old inch sizes. Real tires vary by make and load, so treat it as a guide and use the tire diameter calculator or the lead-lag calculator before you change size on a front-wheel-assist tractor.

Is 16.9-38 a radial or a bias tire?

It is a bias-ply size. The dash in the size marks bias construction, which costs less and has stiffer sidewalls. See the radial vs bias guide.
