Buying 650/65R38 tractor tires

650/65R38 is a wide, low-profile radial rear tire for high-horsepower tractors. It is 650 mm (about 25.6 inches) wide, with a sidewall 65% of the width, on a 38-inch rim, for a nominal overall diameter of about 71 inches. The wide footprint puts a lot of rubber on the ground at lower pressure, so the tractor pulls well with less soil compaction, and many farms use a single set of 650s where they once ran narrower duals.

It is usually built with R-1W tread for traction in heavy and wet soil, and IF (increased flexion) versions are made for even lower working pressure.

Matching the fronts

650/65R38 rears are paired with wide fronts such as 600/65R28 or 540/65R28, depending on the tractor’s gearing. The front axle has to turn slightly faster than the rear, so if you change rear size or brand, check the ratio with us before ordering.

What to check

  • Rim: a 650-wide tire needs a wide 38-inch wheel. Moving up from a narrower tire such as 520/85R38 usually means new wheels. See wheels and rims.
  • Width: check fender clearance and the tractor’s transport width.
  • Load index: match or exceed your current tires. Standard and IF tires use different pressure tables.
  • Used tires: ask for the tread depth as a percent, the date code and photos of both sidewalls.

How tall is the 650/65R38 tire?

The nominal overall diameter is about 71.3 in (1,810 mm), which gives a rolling circumference near 224 in (5,687 mm). That figure is worked out from the size formula (rim plus two sidewalls). Real tires vary by make and load, so treat it as a guide and use the tire diameter calculator or the lead-lag calculator before you change size on a front-wheel-assist tractor.

Is 650/65R38 a radial or a bias tire?

It is a radial. The R in the size marks radial construction, and radials need careful pressure setting. See the radial vs bias guide.
