Are used tractor tires worth buying?
Sometimes, and it depends on the job. Used tractor tires make sense on utility, loader and older tractors, when you need one tire to match a partly worn tire on the same axle, and when budget is tight. For a main field tractor that works long hours, a new tire usually earns back its price in life. One US dealer, Koenig Equipment, puts takeoff tires at roughly 40 to 60 percent of the new price with 70 to 80 percent of the tread left. Treat that as one dealer's range, not a promise. (We would say tread carefully, but you are about to read a whole page about it.)
How do we check a used tractor tire?
Four checks decide whether a used tire is worth the money. Ask any seller for all four, in writing, with photos.
| Check | What good looks like | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| Tread remaining | Lug height measured with a gauge or a ruler next to a center lug | A percentage with no measurement, or only one spot measured |
| Casing | Fine surface checking only | Cracks that show cord, cuts, bulges, or a split on the inside |
| Wear pattern | Even wear across the lugs | Heavy wear on one edge, or cupping, which points to a pressure or alignment problem |
| Repairs | A proper patch in the tread area, disclosed | Sidewall repairs, or several repairs close together |
Our guide to inspecting used tractor tires walks through each check with photos to request.
How old is too old for a used tractor tire?
Check the date code before you check the tread. The last four digits of the DOT code are the week and year of manufacture, so 0308 means week 3 of 2008 (source: NHTSA). Old rubber cracks sooner, even with good tread left. The Purdue Extension tire guide suggests considering replacement once a tire is about 8 years old. Deep tread on an old, cracked tire is still an old, cracked tire.
What do we send before you buy?
- Photos of the actual tire from our supplier, not a stock photo.
- The tread remaining and the DOT date code.
- Close-ups of any repair, crack or cut.
- The size, tread code and construction, so you can match the other tire on the axle.
Any seller who will not send photos of the real tire is telling you something.
Which sizes come used?
We source used rear and front tractor tires, implement tires, skid steer tires and medium truck tires. Look up your size on the tire size index, or see our tractor tires page for tread codes and radial versus bias. Used tractor trailer tires are covered on our medium truck tires page. If your size is not listed, ask anyway: we can often still source it.
Used tractor tires near me: can you ship?
We are not a local tire shop. We ship used tractor tires to customers in the USA and Europe, and shipping takes about 1 week. We quote the shipping with the tires, so you see one total. If you need a tire mounted this afternoon, a local dealer is the better call.
What if the used tire is not what you ordered?
Our returns policy is plain. Report damage within 48 hours of delivery. A wrong item, or one that does not match the description, can be returned within 7 days and we pay the return. Used tires have no change-of-mind returns, which is why we send photos first. Refunds are paid within 7 business days. See the full returns policy.
When you should not buy used
Skip used if the tire is more than about 8 years old, if the sidewall cracks show cord, or if the tractor is a main field machine running long hours. Skip the quote entirely if your tire is only low on air (you need a gauge, not a purchase) or has a simple puncture that a local shop can repair.
Ready to price a used tire? Send us your size on WhatsApp. We'll find the tire, send the photos, and probably make a tread joke. The photos are the part you can rely on.
Questions
Are used tractor tires safe?
They can be, if the casing is sound. Look for even wear, no cord showing in cracks, no bulges and any repairs disclosed. Check the DOT date code too. Ask for photos of the actual tire before you buy.
How much tread should a used tractor tire have left?
It depends on the job. About half the lug height is often fine for utility or loader work, while heavy field work needs more. Ask for a measured figure, not just a percentage.
How old is too old for a used tractor tire?
There is no single cut-off. The last four digits of the DOT code give the week and year of manufacture, and Purdue Extension suggests considering replacement at about 8 years. Sidewall cracks matter more than the date alone.
Do you sell used tractor tires near me?
We are not a local shop. We ship used tractor tires to customers in the USA and Europe, and shipping takes about 1 week. We quote the shipping together with the tires.
Do you sell used tractor trailer tires?
Yes, as medium truck tires in 19.5-inch and 22.5-inch sizes. Send the size, the wheel position and the load range from your current tire.
Can I buy just one used tractor tire?
Yes. A single used tire is a common reason to buy used, to match a partly worn tire on the same axle. Tell us the size, tread code and how worn the other tire is.
Can I return a used tractor tire?
Report damage within 48 hours, or a wrong or not-as-described item within 7 days, and we pay the return. Used tires have no change-of-mind returns, so check the photos first.
How do I get a price for used tractor tires?
Send us the size, the quantity and your delivery location on WhatsApp, and say you want used. We reply with the options we can supply, the photos and the price with shipping.
