Buying 420/85R28 tractor tires

420/85R28 is a radial tire used as a rear on utility tractors and as a front on larger front-wheel-assist tractors. It is 420 mm (about 16.5 inches) wide, with a sidewall 85% of the width, on a 28-inch rim. It is the metric name for 16.9R28; the bias equivalent is 16.9-28.

It is usually made with R-1W tread, about 20% deeper than R-1, for more grip in wet soil and more rubber to wear.

Why radial in this size

  • A longer, flatter footprint pulls with less slip, which saves fuel and time in the field.
  • Lower ground pressure at the right inflation means less soil compaction.
  • A smoother ride on the road, and usually longer tread life than bias.

What to check

  • Front-wheel-assist ratio: front and rear tires are matched for rolling circumference. If you change brand, size or construction on one axle, check the ratio with us first.
  • Load index and speed symbol: match or exceed your current tires, especially with a front loader.
  • Rim width: make sure your rim is within the tire maker’s approved range if you are switching from bias.
  • Used tires: ask for the tread depth as a percent, the date code and photos of both sidewalls.

Send your tractor model, the quantity and delivery location for a quote. See our radial vs bias guide if you are deciding between the two.

How tall is the 420/85R28 tire?

The nominal overall diameter is about 56.1 in (1,425 mm), which gives a rolling circumference near 176 in (4,477 mm). That figure is worked out from the size formula (rim plus two sidewalls). Real tires vary by make and load, so treat it as a guide and use the tire diameter calculator or the lead-lag calculator before you change size on a front-wheel-assist tractor.

Is 420/85R28 a radial or a bias tire?

It is a radial. The R in the size marks radial construction, and radials need careful pressure setting. See the radial vs bias guide.
