Buying 380/85R24 tractor tires

380/85R24 is a radial tire used as the front tire on many front-wheel-assist tractors and as a rear on smaller utility tractors. It is 380 mm (about 15 inches) wide, with a sidewall 85% of the width, on a 24-inch rim. It is the metric name for 14.9R24.

Most 380/85R24 tires use R-1W tread, with lugs about 20% deeper than standard R-1, for grip in wet soil and longer wear.

Matching fronts and rears

On a front-wheel-assist tractor the front axle turns slightly faster than the rear, set by the ratio between front and rear tire circumference. If you replace only the fronts, keep the same size and construction, and ideally the same brand, as the originals, or check the ratio with us. Running the wrong combination wears tires quickly and can damage the front drive. Common rear partners include 520/85R38 and 480/80R34, depending on the tractor.

What to check

  • Load index and speed symbol: the code molded next to the size. Match or exceed your current tires, especially with a front loader.
  • Bias alternative: the bias equivalent is 14.9-24. Don’t mix bias and radial on the same axle.
  • Used tires: ask for the tread depth as a percent, the date code and photos of both sidewalls.

How tall is the 380/85R24 tire?

The nominal overall diameter is about 49.4 in (1,256 mm), which gives a rolling circumference near 155 in (3,945 mm). That figure is worked out from the size formula (rim plus two sidewalls). Real tires vary by make and load, so treat it as a guide and use the tire diameter calculator or the lead-lag calculator before you change size on a front-wheel-assist tractor.

Is 380/85R24 a radial or a bias tire?

It is a radial. The R in the size marks radial construction, and radials need careful pressure setting. See the radial vs bias guide.
