Buying 11L-16 tires

11L-16 is a front steering tire for two-wheel-drive row-crop and utility tractors, usually with ribbed F-2 tread. It is about 11 inches (279 mm) wide on a 16-inch rim; the L means a low-section tire, wider and lower than a standard front of the same rim size. The ribs hold a straight line and stop the front end from sliding sideways on slopes and in loose soil.

The same size is also used on some implements and wagons with rib tread. Tell us whether the tire steers a tractor or rolls on an implement, because the tread and load rating differ.

Easy to confuse

• 11L-15 vs 11L-16: same width, different rim. 11L-15 is also a very common front and implement size, so read the sidewall carefully.

What to check

• Ply rating: 8-ply and 10-ply are common. Tractors with a front loader or front weights need the higher rating.
• Tube or tubeless: tell us what your front rims run.
• Wear pattern: uneven wear on the ribs usually points to toe-in or bearing problems. Fix those before fitting new tires.
• Used tires: ask for photos of the ribs and both sidewalls, and the date code.
• Pairs: replace both fronts together.
