Buying 12.4-16 tires
12.4-16 is a front tire for front-wheel-assist tractors. It is about 12.4 inches (315 mm) wide on a 16-inch rim, usually with R-1 lug tread so the front axle can pull. The wide, fairly short tire carries front weights and loaders well on mid-size four-wheel-drive tractors.
Matching the fronts to the rears
On a front-wheel-assist tractor the front axle is geared to turn slightly faster than the rear. That only works if the front and rear tires have the right rolling circumference. When you replace 12.4-16 fronts, keep the same size and a similar tread depth to the originals, and tell us your rear size if you are changing brand or construction on either axle. The wrong combination wears tires quickly and strains the front drive.
Easy to confuse
- 12.4-16 vs 12.4-24: same width, very different rim and height. 12.4-16 is a front size; 12.4-24 is usually a rear.
- 12.4-16 vs 11L-16: same rim. The 11L-16 is a ribbed steering tire for two-wheel-drive tractors, not a driven front.
What to check
- Ply rating: 6-ply and 8-ply are common. Tractors with a front loader need the higher rating.
- Used tires: front tires on loader tractors wear unevenly. Ask for tread photos, the date code and sidewall pictures.
- Pairs: replace both fronts together.

How tall is the 12.4-16 tire?
The nominal overall diameter is about 37.1 in (942 mm), which gives a rolling circumference near 116 in (2,959 mm). That figure is an estimate that assumes an 85% aspect ratio, the usual rule for old inch sizes. Real tires vary by make and load, so treat it as a guide and use the tire diameter calculator or the lead-lag calculator before you change size on a front-wheel-assist tractor.
Is 12.4-16 a radial or a bias tire?
It is a bias-ply size. The dash in the size marks bias construction, which costs less and has stiffer sidewalls. See the radial vs bias guide.
