Buying 5.50-16 tires

5.50-16 is a front tire for older two-wheel-drive utility tractors, and it is also used on some trailers and implements. It is about 5.5 inches (140 mm) wide on a 16-inch rim.

Which tread do you need?

Most 5.50-16 tractor tires are ribbed steering tires. Tell us if yours is a driven front or an implement wheel.

  • Ribbed front (F-2 style): for steering tires on two-wheel-drive tractors. The ribs hold a straight line and stop the front sliding sideways.
  • R-1 lug: for driven front axles on front-wheel-assist tractors.
  • I-1 rib: for trailers, wagons and implement wheels.

Our tread types guide explains the codes.

Easy to confuse

  • 5.50-16, 6.00-16 and 6.50-16 fit the same 16-inch rim but differ in width and height. Mixing them on one axle makes the tractor pull.

What to check

  • Ply rating: match or exceed your current tires. Tractors with a front loader or front weights need the higher rating.
  • Tube type: many front rims in this size run tubes. Ask if you need new tubes too.
  • Wear pattern: uneven wear on front tires usually points to toe-in, worn bearings or loader weight. Fix the cause before fitting new tires.
  • Used tires: ask for the tread depth, the date code and photos of both sidewalls, and look for weather cracks.
  • Pairs: replace both fronts together.

How tall is the 5.50-16 tire?

The nominal overall diameter is about 25.4 in (644 mm), which gives a rolling circumference near 8 in (2,023 mm). That figure is an estimate that assumes an 85% aspect ratio, the usual rule for old inch sizes. Real tires vary by make and load, so treat it as a guide and use the tire diameter calculator or the lead-lag calculator before you change size on a front-wheel-assist tractor.

Is 5.50-16 a radial or a bias tire?

It is a bias-ply size. The dash in the size marks bias construction, which costs less and has stiffer sidewalls. See the radial vs bias guide.
