Buying 6.00-16 tires

6.00-16 is a front tire size found on many older two-wheel-drive utility tractors, and it is also used on farm trailers, wagons and implements. It is about 6 inches (152 mm) wide on a 16-inch rim. On tractors it is usually a steering tire with ribbed front tread; some front-wheel-assist compact tractors run it with R-1 lugs. Implement versions have rib tread for free-rolling wheels.

Tell us where the tire goes, because steering, driven and implement tires in this size have different treads and load ratings.

Tread types

  • Ribbed front (F-2 style): holds a straight line and resists sliding sideways on a two-wheel-drive tractor.
  • R-1 lug: for driven front axles.
  • I-1 rib: for trailers, wagons and implement wheels.

Our tread types guide explains the codes.

What to check

  • Ply rating: 4-ply and 6-ply are common. Loader tractors and heavy trailers need the higher rating.
  • Tube type: most 6.00-16 tractor tires run with tubes. Ask if you need new tubes too.
  • Used tires: check the date code and look for sidewall cracks. Front tires on older tractors often age out before they wear out.

How tall is the 6.00-16 tire?

The nominal overall diameter is about 26.2 in (665 mm), which gives a rolling circumference near 82 in (2,091 mm). That figure is an estimate that assumes an 85% aspect ratio, the usual rule for old inch sizes. Real tires vary by make and load, so treat it as a guide and use the tire diameter calculator or the lead-lag calculator before you change size on a front-wheel-assist tractor.

Is 6.00-16 a radial or a bias tire?

It is a bias-ply size. The dash in the size marks bias construction, which costs less and has stiffer sidewalls. See the radial vs bias guide.
