Buying 9.5-16 tires
9.5-16 is a front tire for front-wheel-assist utility and compact tractors, and it is also used as a rear on some small compact tractors. It is about 9.5 inches (241 mm) wide on a 16-inch rim, usually with R-1 lug tread so the front axle can pull.
Matching the fronts to the rears
On a four-wheel-drive tractor the front and rear tires are chosen so both axles turn at the right speed. When you replace 9.5-16 fronts, keep the same size and a similar tread depth to the originals. Changing the front size, or putting different rears on, can make the front axle fight the rear, which wears tires fast and strains the front drive. Send us your rear size if you are not sure; common partners are rears such as 13.6-28 or 14.9-28, depending on the tractor.
Easy to confuse
- 9.5-16 vs 9.5L-15: different rims and different tires. The L-series is a wide, low implement or front size on a 15-inch rim.
What to check
- Ply rating: 6-ply and 8-ply are common. Tractors with a front loader need the higher rating.
- Tube or tubeless: many 16-inch front rims run tubes.
- Used tires: front tires on loader tractors often wear unevenly. Ask for tread photos, the date code and sidewall pictures.
- Pairs: replace both fronts together.

How tall is the 9.5-16 tire?
The nominal overall diameter is about 32.2 in (817 mm), which gives a rolling circumference near 101 in (2,565 mm). That figure is an estimate that assumes an 85% aspect ratio, the usual rule for old inch sizes. Real tires vary by make and load, so treat it as a guide and use the tire diameter calculator or the lead-lag calculator before you change size on a front-wheel-assist tractor.
Is 9.5-16 a radial or a bias tire?
It is a bias-ply size. The dash in the size marks bias construction, which costs less and has stiffer sidewalls. See the radial vs bias guide.
