Buying 8.3-16 tires
8.3-16 is a front tire for front-wheel-assist utility and compact tractors, usually with R-1 lug tread so the front axle can pull. It is about 8.3 inches (211 mm) wide on a 16-inch rim.
Which tread do you need?
On a front-wheel-assist tractor the fronts are matched to the rears so both axles turn at the right speed. Replace 8.3-16 fronts with the same size and a similar tread depth, and send us your rear size if you are not sure.
- Ribbed front (F-2 style): for steering tires on two-wheel-drive tractors. The ribs hold a straight line and stop the front sliding sideways.
- R-1 lug: for driven front axles on front-wheel-assist tractors.
- I-1 rib: for trailers, wagons and implement wheels.
Our tread types guide explains the codes.
Easy to confuse
- 8.3-16 vs 9.5-16: same rim, but the 9.5 is wider and taller. On a driven front axle you cannot swap one for the other without upsetting the front-to-rear ratio.
- 8.3-16 vs 8.3-24: same width, different rim. The 24-inch size is a compact rear.
What to check
- Ply rating: match or exceed your current tires. Tractors with a front loader or front weights need the higher rating.
- Tube type: many front rims in this size run tubes. Ask if you need new tubes too.
- Wear pattern: uneven wear on front tires usually points to toe-in, worn bearings or loader weight. Fix the cause before fitting new tires.
- Used tires: ask for the tread depth, the date code and photos of both sidewalls, and look for weather cracks.
- Pairs: replace both fronts together.

What do 8.3-16 tires cost on our site?
This size is not on a model listing yet. Send us the size and we check what we can supply.
How tall is the 8.3-16 tire?
The nominal overall diameter is about 30.1 in (765 mm), which gives a rolling circumference near 95 in (2,403 mm). That figure is an estimate that assumes an 85% aspect ratio, the usual rule for old inch sizes. Real tires vary by make and load, so treat it as a guide and use the tire diameter calculator or the lead-lag calculator before you change size on a front-wheel-assist tractor.
Is 8.3-16 a radial or a bias tire?
It is a bias-ply size. The dash in the size marks bias construction, which costs less and has stiffer sidewalls. See the radial vs bias guide.
