Buying 6.50-16 tires

6.50-16 is a front tire for utility tractors, both as a ribbed steering tire on two-wheel-drive models and as an R-1 driven front on some front-wheel-assist compact and utility tractors. It is also used on trailers. It is about 6.5 inches (165 mm) wide on a 16-inch rim.

Which tread do you need?

Tell us whether the tire steers a two-wheel-drive tractor, drives a front axle, or rolls on a trailer, because the tread and load rating differ.

  • Ribbed front (F-2 style): for steering tires on two-wheel-drive tractors. The ribs hold a straight line and stop the front sliding sideways.
  • R-1 lug: for driven front axles on front-wheel-assist tractors.
  • I-1 rib: for trailers, wagons and implement wheels.

Our tread types guide explains the codes.

Easy to confuse

  • 6.00-16, 6.50-16 and 7.50-16 share the 16-inch rim but differ in width and height. On a driven front axle, changing size changes the front-to-rear ratio.

What to check

  • Ply rating: match or exceed your current tires. Tractors with a front loader or front weights need the higher rating.
  • Tube type: many front rims in this size run tubes. Ask if you need new tubes too.
  • Wear pattern: uneven wear on front tires usually points to toe-in, worn bearings or loader weight. Fix the cause before fitting new tires.
  • Used tires: ask for the tread depth, the date code and photos of both sidewalls, and look for weather cracks.
  • Pairs: replace both fronts together.

How tall is the 6.50-16 tire?

The nominal overall diameter is about 27.1 in (687 mm), which gives a rolling circumference near 85 in (2,158 mm). That figure is an estimate that assumes an 85% aspect ratio, the usual rule for old inch sizes. Real tires vary by make and load, so treat it as a guide and use the tire diameter calculator or the lead-lag calculator before you change size on a front-wheel-assist tractor.

Is 6.50-16 a radial or a bias tire?

It is a bias-ply size. The dash in the size marks bias construction, which costs less and has stiffer sidewalls. See the radial vs bias guide.
