Buying 320/85R24 tractor tires

320/85R24 is a radial tire used as a rear on compact and small utility tractors and as a front on some front-wheel-assist utility tractors. It is 320 mm (about 12.6 inches) wide, with a sidewall 85% of the width, on a 24-inch rim. It is the metric name for 12.4R24; the bias equivalent is 12.4-24.

It is usually built with R-1W tread, with lugs about 20% deeper than standard R-1, for grip in wet soil and longer wear.

Radial on a small tractor?

Radials cost more than bias tires, so on a compact tractor with few hours a year, bias is often the better value. A radial pays off when the tractor spends a lot of time on the road, pulls hard, or needs to be gentle on turf and wet ground, because the flexible sidewall gives a longer, softer footprint. See our radial vs bias guide.

What to check

  • Front-wheel-assist ratio: front and rear tires must keep the right ratio. If you change size, brand or construction on one axle, check with us first.
  • Don’t mix: never run a bias and a radial on the same axle.
  • Load index and speed symbol: match or exceed your current tires, especially with a front loader.
  • Used tires: ask for the tread depth as a percent, the date code and photos of both sidewalls.

How tall is the 320/85R24 tire?

The nominal overall diameter is about 45.4 in (1,154 mm), which gives a rolling circumference near 143 in (3,624 mm). That figure is worked out from the size formula (rim plus two sidewalls). Real tires vary by make and load, so treat it as a guide and use the tire diameter calculator or the lead-lag calculator before you change size on a front-wheel-assist tractor.

Is 320/85R24 a radial or a bias tire?

It is a radial. The R in the size marks radial construction, and radials need careful pressure setting. See the radial vs bias guide.
